Trace.club wasn't designed in a boardroom. It was built in the field — managing a live Chain of Custody group certification. We faced the mess, then fixed it.

How It Started

In 2024, our team at Sustainability.today was managing a live FSC Chain of Custody group certification for wood-products companies across Europe. We had members joining through email, coordinators juggling Excel sheets, and audit season turning into administrative chaos.

The standards were clear. The requirements were defined. But the delivery was a mess: scattered spreadsheets, one-off emails, manual document generation, and endless back-and-forth.

We needed a system that could:

• Give each member their own secure workspace
• Let coordinators see the whole group at a glance
• Automate the repetitive tasks — reminders, validations, reports
• Create an audit trail automatically
• Scale without hiring more people

No existing software fit. So we built Trace.club — not as a side project, but as the operational backbone of our live certification work.

What We Learned

Standards promise trust. FSC, PEFC, and other certifications offer credibility and market access. They're valuable frameworks with clear requirements and proven impact.

But delivery is messy. Without systems, certification becomes a constant fire drill: chasing documents, reminding members, validating data, generating reports — all manually.

Consultants deserve better. Good consultants know their standards. They shouldn't have to be data-entry clerks, email chasers, or Excel artists. Their time should go to advisory work.

Clients want clarity. Members don't want to guess what's needed, when it's due, or where to send it. They want a clear path: one portal, one process, zero surprises.
